“We simply had zero additional power available to us in the data center. We literally could not install another server. Ours was a remarkable consolidation result, even by industry standards.”
Data center modernization, with server consolidation and virtualization, saves 40% on power costs and reduces IT management time for HealthEast, a large regional healthcare provider, to alleviate growing costs and resource demands from server sprawl and aging environment.
Challenge: Expensive Data Center Maintenance at Server Threshold
This regional healthcare provider was hobbled by server sprawl, severe power limitations and the high resource expense of maintaining a congested data center. HealthEast Care System relied on a large, complex computing environment to manage a broad spectrum of business and clinical functions. Over the years, as new applications were deployed, server sprawl hit 300, and IT leadership realized that the data center had reached its server threshold for space, power and IT time required.
Solution: Server Virtualization and Consolidation
Major server virtualization and consolidation initiative, accomplished as a collaborative effort by Datatrend and the HealthEast IT team. HealthEast replaced 184 small servers with five high capacity servers. Now, instead of one application per server — as is often the case in business today — dozens of applications can run on a single server. At the time of this project, consolidation ratios for virtualized servers typically run anywhere from 10:1 up to 30:1, the HealthEast project netted a 37:1 consolidation ratio.expectations.
Result: 40% Reduction in Data Center Power Consumed
HealthEast realized a 40% reduction in data center power consumption with a 14-month project investment recovery timeframe. The project also dramatically decreased utilization of data center space, mitigated future expansion needs, improved application performance, strengthened business continuity and disaster recovery capabilities, and reduced IT staff time required to managing servers. On-time 5-month project completion allowed for faster, more efficient merchandise access, boosting revenue and customer satisfaction.
